Brooklyn, New York |
Slotted between several other aging brownstones, this project became an exercise in renovation and preservation. The owner-builder client wanted to preserve the lost beauty of the building's historically detailed interior while introducing modern design concepts.
Each floor of this five story brownstone is purposed to create a complete living and working space for the resident couple. Original details mix with newly clean lines to create a story seeded in history while embracing modern living. A garden level rental apartment creates the base of the five story renovation. The first floor was transformed to studio and office. The second floor was opened to create space for a kitchen, dining room, living area, and outdoor deck. Two bedrooms and bath combine with living space on the third floor while the fourth floor has become a skylit studio with roof access for Brooklyn rooftop views. Saving the brownstone bones offers a respectful nod to all those who came before.
